How can I apply for a passport

Online Form	Go to the Passport Seva website. Fill out the online application form carefully. Select "Fresh Passport" and choose Normal or Tatkal service.
Book a Slot	After filling out the form, pay the application fee online. Then, book an appointment at your nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK).
Document	Prepare your original documents. You need proof of address, date of birth, and identity. Carry self-attested copies with you.
Visit PSK	On your appointment date, visit the PSK. Submit your documents and provide your fingerprints and photo. The officer will verify your details.
Police Check	After your visit, police verification will start. For Tatkal, it may happen after issuance. Once cleared, your passport will be printed and mailed to you.

How can I check my application status

Step	Action to Take
Find Your Number	Find your 15-digit file number. It is on the receipt you got after your Passport Seva Kendra appointment.
Visit Website	Go to the official Passport Seva website. Look for the "Track Your Application Status" link.
Enter Details	On the tracking page, enter your 15-digit file number. Type your date of birth in the box.
Check Status	Click the "Track Status" button. Your current application stage will appear on the screen.
Understand Status	Read the status message. It will say if your application is under review, with the police, or printed and dispatched.

How to renew a passport in India

Check Eligibility	You can renew if your passport:
	Is about to expire or has expired, has less than 3 years of validity left, and has exhausted its visa pages.
Online Form & Pay Fee	Apply for a Fresh Passport/Re-issue of a Passport, and the fee to pay for a 36-page passport is 1,500.
Schedule Appointment	• Book an appointment at your chosen Passport Seva Kendra (PSK)
Prepare Documents	• Current/Original Passport, Address Proof, Date of Birth Proof, and Printed Application Receipt
Visit PSK/POPSK	• Carry all the original documents and their photocopies before your scheduled time.
Police Verification	• Process: If required, a police verification will be initiated at your registered address.
Receive Your Passport	• You will receive an SMS with the tracking number.

What is the police verification process

Step	What Happens in Police Verification
Initiation	After your appointment at the passport office, they send your details to your local police station.
Notification	A police officer from your area receives the task. They may call you to schedule a visit to your home.
Home Visit	The officer visits your given address. They verify that you live there and ask questions about your details.
Report Making	The officer checks your background and submits a report to their superiors. This report is then sent to the passport office.
Final Step	The passport office reviews the police report. If it is clear, your passport application is approved, and the passport is printed.
